Welcome to my Desolation Series.
This series was created to bring awareness to how important pollinators are to our world. Without the bees and butterflies, our world would be dark and cold and desolate. I selected my medium to reflect the contrast between desolation and life.
The background of these works was done in charcoal and the structure in ink. I chose charcoal for the background because you can create a beautiful grayscale with it. The softness of charcoal is perfect for a dreary overcast sky. I chose ink for the structures because of its dark richness. The manmade structures, even after years of neglect. create a starkness in a world of natural decay.
The foreground was drawn in colored pencil. I chose colored pencils because of the bright, vibrant, life you can create with them. The flowers and pollinators are bringing life back into this desolate landscape.
I chose to hand cut out the flowers and insects and paste them in layers to create even more depth.
The flowers and insects in this series were chosen because they are native to North American and play vital roles in our ecosystems.
